Letter from the President

Making Progress
January, 2008

Dear Friend and Patron:

With another year behind us, we wish to thank you for your continued support. Through your contributions, we continue to have the resources to pursue our mission of marshalling and providing resources for lifelong learning by Brookfield residents of all ages.

We hope you and your family have benefited from some of our 2007 funded projects which included: Hand in Hand Literacy Program at HHES, Learning to Listen Program and heart rate monitors purchased for WMS, Capturing Kids Hearts program at BHS, Brookfield Library’s Birds Program, Nintendo Wii game system purchased for the Senior Center, and the completion of the Brookfield TV & Video Studio available to all residents, located at BHS.

We are currently raising funds for two new programs that will have long lasting benefits. The town is moving forward with the development of an Environmental Greenway Education Trail. With federal funding in hand, this handicap accessible multi-functional trail will begin on Silvermine Road near the police station and will run along the Still River for about two miles. This trail will provide passive recreational opportunities for hiking, bicycling and nature study. The “environmental education” function of the pathway to be funded by the Brookfield Education Foundation includes the development, production and installation of self-interpretive signs along the Greenway to explain the ecological functions of the river, the floodplain, the forests and other key habitats that comprise these ecosystems. The goal is to have this trail open in 2009.

The second program we are funding is pedometers for the “Rise & Shine” fitness walking program, held at HHES. The pedometers will enhance the program by allowing students, parents, senior citizens and all Brookfield resident participants to track their progress daily. The goal is to reach 10,000 steps per day and to educate the community about healthy physical activity for life. Anyone can join the fitness walks, held at HHES Tuesday and Thursday mornings, beginning at 8:25 a.m.

We always welcome project ideas, volunteers and your financial support!

Regards,

Carol Dores
